So I have now been at the nursing home for a whole year, and it has flown in. Not only has it been an amazing experience but I have found a job I love that has pushed me in many ways, it has been an extreme learning curve. It is amazing how much information you don't learn when volunteering compared to working within an establishment, things like the amount of paperwork, the process of someone entering an home and how much families are evolved etc.
I am continuously learning, I have definitely not learnt nearly enough and I think within a job like this you will never completely stop learning, adapting or developing and that is extremely exciting.
I love learning about my residents, their stories and them as individuals. They are such a fascinating bunch that are also teaching me loads of new things everyday. it makes me smile when I see their faces every morning.
Yes, it is a hard job though when you loose someone, that is one aspect of the job I don't think I will ever quite get used to, they become like a strange separate family that you see everyday and so obviously it hurts a lot when someone passes away, but I think that you do feel awful is a good thing as if you became numb to it or it becomes the 'norm' it is time to leave that practice as a human life should always be important and affect you.
